Castle Roche - watercolor

      Castle Roche is a 13th century castle in County Louth, Ireland. 

      Painting so many landscapes - especially of Ireland - has forced me to come to terms with my issues with green. I think I'm getting somewhere; at least, I'm seeing more natural greens. I'm especially happy with how the modeling worked out here showing the undulations of the ground. 

      The tree and some of the rocks are done with a technique often called dry-brush using paint almost directly from the tube with little or no water on the brush. This allows the normally transparent paint to be opaque so I can paint light over dark and build texture.

      That was a tough green to create. I tried to match an actual factory color. It's close-ish. If you know the color, you'll get the idea. Call it a "suggestion."

      Just a loose landscape with Cashel Castle in the background. I think I went a little British on this one, but not too much. I'm pretty happy with the sky and the aerial perspective with the castle itself being a little indistinct.

      This is from a reference photo I've had for several years afraid to tackle the detail and the shadows. I finally decided to jump in and I'm glad I did. This worked out better than I expected and pops right off the page/screen.

      Here's another duck decoy. I'm very happy with the texture on this little fellow -- and the form shadows on the head. They worked out nicely.

      This is from a reference photo I shot back in the summer of Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church in Blowing Rock, NC. There is a particular lighting issue that bugs me. But, it's probably only noticeable to me. Otherwise, I'm pretty happy with a couple new techniques I tried out on this one.

      A lot of the grass and leaves are dry brush right out of the tube. I like that effect better than what you get from masking fluid.

      Still struggling with a looser, more impressionist approach. While painting, I feel like certain things are working well, like the red and gold molding and the potted plant. Other things just don't seem right. Maybe it's just me. Maybe I just have to get used to seeing the finished product of a loose style and remember that I'm trying to get away from photographic realism.
