50 Plymouth - watercolor+ink

mixed; 2019
NFS; 8"x10"

A quick little piece I did for a friend's father. This was a car he used to own and only had a couple photos of it in his driveway. I sent it to him through his son, my high school friend, and he liked it so much he mailed me a hand-written thank-you note. Better than any commission check.

53 Commander - ink+watercolor

mixed, 2018
available, 11"x15"

I've always felt Studebaker was ahead of its time with the aerodynamics of some of its car designs. Many of their cars look like they're moving fast just sitting still.

Red Barn - watercolor + ink

mixed, 2016
available, 9"x12"

A quick, little ink and wash sketch of a barn in early fall. This one is actually 5"x7" on a 9"x12" sheet to help set off the image.

53 Skylark - watercolor + ink

mixed, 2016
available, 9"x12"

Not much to say about this one. Just another ink and wash classic car. I really like the graphic nature of Buick's old vertical grill. The ink on this one has a unique look because I used Arches cold-pressed watercolor paper instead of the smoother paper I normally use for inks. The paper texture made for a lot of skipping -- or micro-skipping -- in the ink line. I like the look a lot, but I'll probably stick to the smoother papers most of the time.

Tivat Church - watercolor+ink

mixed, 2016
available, 11"x15"

Virtual Paintout is in Montenegro this month. This is as close as Google Maps Street View gets to this small church on a hill at the center of an island. But I liked the view with the walled dirt road leading in.

Tuk Tuk - watercolor

mixed, 2016
available, 11"x15"

Virtual Paintout is in Sri Lanka this month. I often have trouble finding images that appeal to me in some locations. But, given my affinity for vehicles, I had to do something with this obvious symbol of South Asian transportation. In almost every StreetView image you see at least one of these. I had a little fun with this one using John Lovett's technique of adding gesso to break up and lighten parts of the otherwise finished watercolor.

Mallorca Villa - watercolor+ink

mixed, 2016
available, 8"x10"

This is another reference from Mallorca for Virtual Paintout. I'd seen another artist use a blue watercolor wash with an ink sketch and liked the effect. So, here you go, some thin Prussian Blue over an ink sketch.

57 Chevy #7 - watercolor + charcoal

mixed, 2012
available, 22"x30"

This is an older piece I discovered I hadn't uploaded here. It's a piece that is started and finished as a complete charcoal drawing. Then I fix the charcoal to keep it from rubbing off and paint over it with watercolor. The charcoal becomes a great underpainting and gives those deep shadows. I've done several pieces this way, though it's been a while since the last one.

48 Pontiac Silver Streak - ink+watercolor

mixed, 2015
available, 11"x15"

This is how I spent part of a day off. I haven't done one of these in a while. It's time to get them back in the rotation.

Clarinet - watercolor+charcoal

mixed, 2011
original available, 15"x22" $350

Here's one from my instrument series. Most of these are done with charcoal and watercolor, an interesting mix that gives a wonderful amount of depth. I have a moderate connection to the clarinet as both of my older sisters played clarinet through jr. high and high school.

The Ford Mustang turned 50 this month and I've been celebrating by posting most of my Mustang paintings.
