Farther Out Edgefield Road - watercolor

watercolor; 2019
available; 11"x15"

Another little landscape from Edgefield. I think this was the Johnson farm.

The Hill Behind Work - watercolor

watercolor, 2018
available, 11"x15"

I painted this from a photo I took during our January snow storm. It's the view out an emergency exit near my desk at work. Pulled the masking fluid out for this one. I almost never use it. But, sometimes it's better than adding in highlights with white gouache after the fact.

Farm Hauler - watercolor

watercolor, 2015
available, 15"x22"

Another loose, impressionistic rusty truck. Pretty happy with this one. I'm finding that when I'm not happy with something it isn't always because there's something wrong with that spot; it's often because I haven't gotten my head completely wrapped around impressionism and suggesting rather than showing every little thing. Progress, maybe?

Reclamation Project - watercolor

watercolor, 2015
available, 11"x15"

A lot of the grass and leaves are dry brush right out of the tube. I like that effect better than what you get from masking fluid.

Courthouse - watercolor

watercolor, 2015
available, 8"x10"

Virtual Paintout is in Utah this month. I really like how this one worked out, somewhat loose and very realistic at the same time.

Watauga - watercolor

watercolor, 2015
available, 11"x15"

A quick loose piece. I don't paint a lot of animals, but the contrast of the horses against the dark, shadowed background - along with the tree shadows made this scene pop.

Window #1 - watercolor

watercolor, 2015
available, 9"x12"

This is a quick little piece that's a little looser than my previous style. Not much else to say about it really.

View To Rattoo - watercolor

watercolor, 2015
original available, 9"x12" $75

Just a loose look at Rattoo Round Tower in Ireland. This is a reference I collected a few months ago when Virtual Paintout was in Ireland, but never got around to painting it.

Vines - watercolor

watercolor, 2015
original available, 9"x12" $75

This one is very loose, possibly too loose. I'm still not sure about it. I could still go back in and add to it with pastels or ink.

Ross Castle With Open Gate - watercolor

watercolor, 2014
original available, 9"x12" $100

Another one for this month's Virtual Paintout. That's four so far and they only accept three per month. I'm just doing them for the fun and practice now. I really like this one. I might actually be getting somewhere with landscapes.

Banner Elk - watercolor

watercolor, 2014
original available, 8"x10" $100

This one is painted from a photo I shot at the Banner Elk Winery here in North Carolina several years ago, so long ago, in fact, that it was shot on film. I shot several photos while we were there with an eye toward painting them later. This is the first -- and will probably be the only -- one I've actually painted. I hit it loose and more suggestively. I'm trying to move away from being a camera myself  - at least sometimes.
