Bhutan - watercolor

watercolor, 2015
9"x12" available

Virtual Paintout is in Bhutan this month. I had a lot going on and almost didn't get anything done for this month. But here it is, another step toward a looser, more impressionist style.

Lexington WiFi - watercolor

watercolor, 2015
original available, 11"x15" $125

Lexington NC is a forward-thinking little town with a thriving downtown that offers free wi-fi. I really wasn't thinking about that when I took the reference photo. But the red and white sign makes for a nice focal point. When I took the shot I was so intent on getting the pedestrians in the shot before they disappeared into a store that I didn't realize the trees and utility pole lined up the way they did. It looks a little odd, but I guess it still works. There's a lot of other things about this one that I got exactly the way I wanted, though.

The Chappie At Wanchese - gouache

gouache, 2015
11"x15" $125

The Chappie has been out of the water four years. After her owner and captain died his daughters spent a large sum having her set here just a few feet from the Wanchese commercial fishing marina, facing the sea, just behind the viewer's standpoint.

Chuck's Bike - watercolor

watercolor, 2015
NFS, 11"x15"

My sister is selling her late husband's Heritage Softtail and asked me to paint it. I'll probably do one or two more views later on.

The City of High Point - watercolor

watercolor, 2015
11"x15" $125

I was getting some shots of the train depot in Salisbury NC a few years ago when I got lucky and a train actually pulled in. Well, imagine my surprise when the train in question was named "The City of High Point," my hometown. This is one of those pieces that seems to be growing on me. I was "happy" with it when I finished it, meaning it had some good point and some bad points. But the more I look at it, the more I like, the more I think it shows me heading in the right impressionistic direction.

Currituck - watercolor

watercolor, 2015
original available, 11"x15" $125

This is from a photo I took a couple weeks ago during our trip back to the Outer Banks of North Carolina for the first time in 24 years. We only had one day of good weather, the day I got this shot. So, I'll have to make the most of gray, cloudy reference photos. Overall, I'm happy with the looseness of this piece, though there are a couple things I could've done differently.
