A little piece of the tail of a 1957 Buick. It's hard to tell from the reference photo I had, but I think this car had been hit somewhere in the rear causing an odd looking shift in direction for certain parts. Or, I guess it's possible that at such an isolated view some things just look like they fit together quite right.

Just a couple old Chevy trucks left to guard the shed out back. There's a fair amount of dry brush in this one.

Just an old Buick left to its own devices on the prairie. I used a little thinned gesso to knock back some of the color intensity in the bottom corners. I like the look of the gesso rather than just lifting with a wet brush. There's also a considerable amount of dry-brush to get the lightest grasses.

Nice value contrast. Nice foreshortening. I like how the color contrast worked out between the manganese and phthalo blues and the burnt sienna/umber reds. My favoritest part is that highlight just behind the headlight. I don't know if I could do that again on purpose if I had to.

A rusty old Packard. Not much more to say about this one.

Milton's rusty old Chrysler hasn't run in 50 years.
There's a fair amount of dry-brush on this one. I also used some thin acrylic gesso to wash out corners.

Just a little still life. I really like how the can surface and reflections turned out.

I couldn't resist juxtaposing a rusting out hulk of rolling sculpture that's only about 70 years old against the still-chugging steam locomotive that's probably well over 100 years old in the background. There are a couple issues here, but everything pales in comparison to how well that smoke turned out.
The title is from Sam Raimi's mid-90s Western. I thought it was appropriate.

Just a close-up of a bullet hood ornament. I just can't remember what model this is.

I finally got a rusty truck in a landscape in which I'm happy with both aspects. The truck worked out very nicely. And, I'm very happy with the field and barn in the background. There's a pretty good blend of looseness and detail, combined with some nice aerial perspective to give the effect I was after. I'll call it a win.

A little looseness, a little detail, a little chrome, a little rust.

I painted this from a composite photo I put together from separate photos of the truck and barn. I'm very happy with how that process worked out. Too often the angles don't workout, or it's difficult to place the different objects on different planes so they don't look like they exist in the same space. And, then, of course, there's the lighting to work out. This one fell together nice and easy.

This one worked out a lot better than I thought it might. For some reason I struggled more than usual with this type of subject. Maybe it was the paper; I think this was a trial sheet of Lanaquarelle. Overall, I think I like the paper. But every paper takes some "getting-used-to." I might have had an easier time on Arches or Moulin du Roi.

A Sedan DeVille that's seen better days. I'm very happy with this one in all it's loose realism.

This probably should be called "Rusty Cadi Redux" because I've painted this particular image before - back in 2011 (Rusty Cadi). The original was auctioned off for the local United Way a few years ago. But I've always liked the reference photo and thought it would be fun to revisit it in a slightly looser style. So, here it is, though the style isn't much looser than the first attempt.

This is from a reference photo I've had for several years afraid to tackle the detail and the shadows. I finally decided to jump in and I'm glad I did. This worked out better than I expected and pops right off the page/screen.

Just another barn somewhere. I made up Edgefield because the barn is on the edge of the field and I couldn't think of anything else. I may continue to use Edgefield as a fictional place where all sorts of art lives.
