Peekaboo E - gouache

gouache, 2017
available, 8"x10"

The venerable Jaguar E-Type peeking out from under a car cover. I gave this one a watercolor underpainting using the several left over colors on my palette - making that gray background color. The gouache covers right over with no migration or noticeable lifting like you might get with a watercolor wash. The abstract background shapes aren't meant to signify anything, just add a bit of depth around and behind the subject.

51 Kaiser Henry J - gouache

gouache, 2017
available, 8"x10"

I've had the reference for this one for years. I was never quite sure about the odd angle and foreshortening. I finally decided that gouache would be better than watercolor for the almost cartoony look of the image. It turned out this was one of those paintings that painted itself in just a few hours. It was possibly the fastest I've ever painted anything with this level of realism.

No Place Like Home #2 - gouache

gouache, 2017
available, 8"x10"

Just another little gouache shoe painting. I struggled with some of the reflections and highlights -- par for the course with me and gouache. But, I think I finally pulled it off.

Tulips - gouache

gouache, 2017
available, 11"x15"

Starting the new year off with a little still life I kicked out one weekend. I think it worked out a lot better than I expected. I'm not quite as confident with gouache as I'd like to be. But I'm getting there.

Cow #1 - gouache

gouache, 2017
available, 11"x15"

A painterly cow portrait to go with my rooster a couple weeks back. Cow portraits have been popular for a several years, so I thought I'd try one. Not bad, but I don't think I'll make a career of it.

Cogburn - gouache

gouache, 2017
available, 11"x15"

I've had this rooster reference photo sitting around for years, originally planning to do a very loose watercolor. I finally pulled it out and a realist gouache showed up.

The Grim Mower - gouache

gouache, 2017
available, 7.5"x11"

Just a fun little piece to get back into gouache. I haven't done anything in gouache in a while. More to come.

Table Taxi - gouache

gouache, 2015
available, 11"x15"

This is from another shot I took on my phone while wandering around an antique store.

41 Cadi Series 61 Club - gouache

gouache, 2015
available, 11"x15"

I think the scan increased the contrast in a couple spots more than I like. The worst offender - the only spot that really bothers me - is the reflection in the car door. That's a lot lighter and more harsh than it is in real life. Other than that (and the grass which I'm never happy with) I'm quite happy with this one.

#387 - gouache

gouache, 2015
available, 11"x15"

I'm pretty happy with how this figure/portrait worked out. I actually had intended to go a little looser. But, it just wanted to be more realistic. I squeezed in some looser spots here and there, though.

Coffee In The Window - gouache

gouache, 2015
available, 11"x15"

My sister recently started selling things in a local "antique" mall. While checking out her space and helping bring in a heavier item I saw these displayed just across from her. There was a lot more junk cluttering the area and the window didn't actually look outside, just over to another space. But, I saw "something" there and had to settle for a bad phone camera shot. It seems to have worked out OK, though.

Red Royal - gouache

gouache, 2015
available, 11"x15"

I never had the pleasure of typing on a manual typewriter. My first typewriter was a monster IBM Selectric. That was probably 1985 and it might have been several years old by the time I got it.

Bicycle #3 - gouache

gouache, 2015
NFS, 11"x15"

I love where this one went. I knew gouache could be used to duplicate the look of oils without the fumes, danger and technical mumbo-jumbo. And, that's sort of where I've been heading. But, this one blows me away. It just fell into place.
