Farther Out Edgefield Road - watercolor

watercolor; 2019
available; 11"x15"

Another little landscape from Edgefield. I think this was the Johnson farm.

Forgotten - watercolor

watercolor, 2018
available, 11"x15"

I finally got a rusty truck in a landscape in which I'm happy with both aspects. The truck worked out very nicely. And, I'm very happy with the field and barn in the background. There's a pretty good blend of looseness and detail, combined with some nice aerial perspective to give the effect I was after. I'll call it a win.

On Edgefield Road - watercolor

watercolor, 2018
available, 11"x15"

Just a quick field and barn. The composition here doesn't do much for me. But parts of it worked nicely.

Cow #1 - gouache

gouache, 2017
available, 11"x15"

A painterly cow portrait to go with my rooster a couple weeks back. Cow portraits have been popular for a several years, so I thought I'd try one. Not bad, but I don't think I'll make a career of it.

Edgefield Barn - watercolor

watercolor, 2016
available, 11"x15"

Just another barn somewhere. I made up Edgefield because the barn is on the edge of the field and I couldn't think of anything else. I may continue to use Edgefield as a fictional place where all sorts of art lives.

Wallburg Farm - watercolor

watercolor, 2016
available, 11"x15"

This has nothing to do with the one from a couple weeks ago. The reference photos were taken 4-5 miles and 2-3 years apart. Still playing with leading lines and vignetting. I'm not sure the vignette works with this one.

Wallburg Barn - watercolor

watercolor, 2016
available, 11"x15"

I'm abstracting just a bit in this one leaning toward impressionism. But, not enough. I might need to return to this spot for more reference photos.

St. Anne's - watercolor

watercolor, 2016
available, 11"x15"

St. Anne's is a picturesque, old church in the eastern part of North Carolina. I wasn't too sure about this one until after I scanned it. I like it more now than I did before. But I still might try it again to add some more air around it. I think it's a little too crowded.

Barn - watercolor

watercolor, 2016
available, 11"x15"

This one went a lot darker than it should have. But, it turned into a study in pulling out all the stops and using all the tricks to save a failed painting. And, I'm still not crazy about it.

Local Eggs - watercolor

watercolor, 2016
available, 11"x15"

This is where urban meets rural in my hometown. Just to the right a modern retail area begins. Just behind those tree is an interstate highway. But turn left here and you head out of town into what's left of farmland between High Point and Winston-Salem NC. Years ago, I'm sure this store thrived as it's on what was then the main road between the two cities. Now, if you didn't live in that area, you'd never know it was still open.

Randolph Farm In Winter #1 - watercolor

watercolor, 2016
available, 11"x15"

The effects of the recent winter storm on an abandoned farm near my sister's house.

Ford Afield - watercolor

watercolor, 2015
available, 11"x15"

Merry Christmas all! I know this isn't very festive, but I've never had much success with holiday-themed pieces. Maybe that's something I should think about for the new year.

Farm Hauler - watercolor

watercolor, 2015
available, 15"x22"

Another loose, impressionistic rusty truck. Pretty happy with this one. I'm finding that when I'm not happy with something it isn't always because there's something wrong with that spot; it's often because I haven't gotten my head completely wrapped around impressionism and suggesting rather than showing every little thing. Progress, maybe?

Spare - watercolor

watercolor, 2014
original available, 11"x15" $175

I was drawn to this because of the abstract color-field look of it.

Wallburg Barn - watercolor

watercolor, 2014
original available, 9"x12" $125

A small barn or shack I found just a few feet off the road in the Wallburg area.

Winter Farm - watercolor

watercolor, 2014
original available, 8"x10" $75

An old farm in Guilford County, NC slowly being surrounded and crowded by development and modernity. It faces a medical and office complex that's less than five years old just across the road. Fifty yards to the right of this view is a busy four-lane highway. Thousands of people rush by every day never knowing the peace and simplicity that's just out of sight.

59 Apache #2 - watercolor

watercolor, 2014
original available - 11"x15" $350
prints also available

Another view of the abandoned Chevy on Horneytown Road this time in my old friend watercolor. This one turned out really well, though I still wish I'd done a little more with the headlights.
