Aubrey - pencil

pencil; 2020
available; 9"x12"

I don't post a lot of drawings or sketches - mainly because most of them are very rough value sketches for watercolor paintings. But, some end up getting finished as pretty decent little drawings in their own right. This one finished up a lot better than most.

Delicious - pencil

pencil, 2019
available, 8"x10"

Happy Halloween! This is a sketch for a painting I haven't had time to get to before the unholy horrorday.

Skully - pencil

pencil, 2019
available, 8"x10"

I caught Skully in just the right light for a sketch.

Red Barn - watercolor + ink

mixed, 2016
available, 9"x12"

A quick, little ink and wash sketch of a barn in early fall. This one is actually 5"x7" on a 9"x12" sheet to help set off the image.

Gulf Presbyterian - watercolor

watercolor, 2016
available, 9"x12"

This is a little sketch of a church not too far from my home, but done from a Google Maps Street View image. My biggest issues with this one is, of course, the trees, with which I'm never happy, and the small suggestion of a graveyard. I should have made that a bit more prominent. The shadows on the building could have gone a bit more cool or warm; it doesn't matter which. They just need to have some color. The red door color was a change from the original to add pop and an obvious focal point.

Salisbury Corbel - watercolor

watercolor, 2016
available, 11"x15"

This is architectural detail from a building in downtown Salisbury NC. I just thought it would make an interesting subject.

Angie #31 sketch - watercolor

watercolor, 2016
nfs, 9"x12"

I'm trying a new technique that I've admired for years but never spent much time trying to figure out. It involves layering colors in what on the surface seems abstract. But each layer and each color adds to the development of the image. In a way, you could say that description is accurate for a lot of watercolor. But this method is different. If you isolated just the yellow ochre in this piece, it wouldn't look anything like a portrait; that follows for most of the other colors. I'll consider this one fairly successful, though it's obvious I used cheap paper. But it is a sketchy experiment.

Hop's - watercolor

watercolor, 2016
available, 9"x12"

Just a quick, sketchy painting of a restaurant in downtown Asheboro NC.  There are only a few things I like about this one. It might be re-worked at some point.

Veteran's Memorial - watercolor

watercolor, 2016
available, 9"x12"

I don't know how often he does this. But this guy -- who I assume is a veteran -- rode this modern motorcycle with military livery to the Veterans' Memorial (monument and red, white and blue wreath at far left) in downtown Blowing Rock NC and sat in front of it for at least a couple hours the Saturday I was there. This is just a quick, loose sketch that I'm really not crazy about at all. But I thought this guy was worth a little paint.

Mallorca Villa - watercolor+ink

mixed, 2016
available, 8"x10"

This is another reference from Mallorca for Virtual Paintout. I'd seen another artist use a blue watercolor wash with an ink sketch and liked the effect. So, here you go, some thin Prussian Blue over an ink sketch.

Bhutan - watercolor

watercolor, 2015
9"x12" available

Virtual Paintout is in Bhutan this month. I had a lot going on and almost didn't get anything done for this month. But here it is, another step toward a looser, more impressionist style.

Gothenburg - watercolor + ink

mixed, 2014
original available, 9"x12" on handmade paper $100

This is a sketch for this month's Virtual Paintout blog. I thought I'd try something loose and wet this time. I added a touch of ink in to define some lines.

Lubitel - ink

ink, 2011

This is an ink sketch of a Russian Lubitel TLR I bought almost 30 years ago well before the recent fascination with cheap plastic cameras. It shoots medium format 120 film. I've only put a few rolls through it in all these years. I need to get it out and play some more.
