Portland Bill - watercolor

watercolor, 2017
available, 11"x15"

Just a quick landscape of the Portland Bill Lighthouse and a couple resting boats. I tried phthalo blue for the sky. In mass tone I hate the phthalo colors. But, when applied fairly thin, phthalo blue makes a nice sky. I'm also happy with how the ocean and surf worked -- and how easy it was. I usually struggle with believable surf.

Beach Baby - watercolor

watercolor, 2017
nfs, 11"x15"

My first great-niece. I shot a few photos of her on a chance meeting between my wife and I and my nephew and his young family at a popular NC beach. Neither of us knew the other was there until they posted something to Instagram. A couple weeks later, they've got a portrait of their little beach baby. Honestly, this might be one of my best.

Sullivan's Island - watercolor

watercolor, 2016
available, 11"x15"

I took a lot of reference photos during our September 2015 trip to Charleston, SC. When I took this one I knew it was kind of cliche. A photo of any kind of sailboat on the beach is on every real estate and tourism brochure for every coastal community in the world. But this one works, I think, since I framed the lighthouse in the rigging and I'm very happy with the looseness.

Currituck - watercolor

watercolor, 2015
original available, 11"x15" $125

This is from a photo I took a couple weeks ago during our trip back to the Outer Banks of North Carolina for the first time in 24 years. We only had one day of good weather, the day I got this shot. So, I'll have to make the most of gray, cloudy reference photos. Overall, I'm happy with the looseness of this piece, though there are a couple things I could've done differently.

Coumenoole - watercolor

watercolor, 2014
original available, approx. 8"x10" $125

Virtual Paintout is in County Kerry, Ireland this month -- just as I've begun studying James Fletcher-Watson's landscapes. Is that synchronicity - or something? Normally, I struggle to find one image that really speaks to me in VP's locations. This month I found so many I had to stop myself. I've had to whittle down from 12, and I'll probably do more than these two. Anyway, this (above) is the beach at Coumenoole on the Dingle Peninsula.
The one below is the Rattoo Round Tower. I found several good views of this gem and probably will do one or two more.
