Pascal Ave, Rockport - watercolor

watercolor, 2016
available, 11"x15"

A street scene in Rockport, ME, another I found for Virtual Paintout this month. I'm very happy with this one. I hit just about all the notes for which I was aiming. This is very much the loose impressionism I've been struggling to develop. I'm not even going to mention the minor problems that usually fill these posts.

Sidewalk Reader - watercolor

watercolor, 2015
available, 9"x12"

This is from a reference photo I took a couple Saturdays back in Asheboro NC. This one is on the small side because I painted it over the course of a few lunch hours at work. It looks a little empty to me now that it's finished. I left out some clutter behind the seated man because it was -- well -- clutter. I might try this one again in a larger size and leave in some of the clutter. I'm pretty happy with it otherwise.  It's definitely a step in the direction I want to take. Prints, of course, are available here.

Lexington WiFi - watercolor

watercolor, 2015
original available, 11"x15" $125

Lexington NC is a forward-thinking little town with a thriving downtown that offers free wi-fi. I really wasn't thinking about that when I took the reference photo. But the red and white sign makes for a nice focal point. When I took the shot I was so intent on getting the pedestrians in the shot before they disappeared into a store that I didn't realize the trees and utility pole lined up the way they did. It looks a little odd, but I guess it still works. There's a lot of other things about this one that I got exactly the way I wanted, though.

Kujallec #1 - watercolor

watercolor, 2015
original available, 9"x12" $75

Finally, I was able to paint some over the weekend. This is a small village in Greenland, where Virtual Paintout has taken us this month. I'll have at least one more piece from this little town and possibly another painting from elsewhere in Greenland.
I'm pretty happy with this one. It hits several loose, impressionism notes I've been working on lately.

Coleridge House - watercolor

watercolor, 2014
original available, 11"x15" $200

This beautiful old house is on NC 42 just across from what is essentially a ghost town. Literally, if you were standing in this spot and turned around, you would see the brick shells of buildings that haven't been occupied in many years and just around this curve is the shell of the abandoned textile mill that was the backbone of this town.. Coleridge used to be a thriving little mill town with a small textile mill, its own bank and a few other businesses. All that's gone now. But a few people still live in the area and either farm or drive to large towns nearby to work.
